Summer Programs Round-Up: Creative Cookie + CJC

In July and August, K.I.D.S. Art Ed. teamed up with two amazing Red Hook partners to offer creative summer camp programs led by Teaching Artist Ruth Wetzel!

The week of July 7, we invited Lesley Ware (aka. The Creative Cookie) and her eco-style fashion design group into our space for a 3-day fashion illustration workshop. On day one, the girls took turns modeling for one another, learning how to quickly but accurately capture movement in the body through figure drawing. Ruth demonstrated concepts of proportion, contrapposto, and balance.

On day two, our young designers worked with scale models, magazine clippings and tracing paper to explore how fabric enhances and changes shapes in the body. They modified these images to design their own couture outfits, and the final drawings were later printed onto tote bags as fashionable keepsakes! Have a look at their process and illustrations:

Thanks to Lesley and her crew for your hard work and graciousness. We hope to stay involved in the awesome work you are doing!

Later in July into early August, Ruth led a 10-day summer drawing workshop for middle school-aged youth in partnership with The Red Hook Community Justice Center. The theme of the course was "organic vs. geometric," examining what techniques and styles make forms appear round, flat, uniform, or wonky. Due to the small class size, students got the opportunity to work up-close in the gallery and had lots of freedom to explore all aspects of the  lesson. Here they are using big gestures to shade and add dimension to round shapes:

On August 4, friends and family visited the gallery to view a special exhibition of our summer students' fascinating artwork. We are proud of their work, as I know they are! Big thanks to Sabrina and Jessica at CJC for making this class happen.

We are so excited to begin the fall season in early September with a new round of Drawing Together, School Programs and After-School! Keep looking at K.I.D.S. Art Ed's blog and facebook for updates on new programs, new Teaching Artists (!!!), and exciting new partnerships!
