Drawing Together: Summer 2014

Kentler's current show, "Large & Small: Selections from the Kentler Flatfiles," is full of intricate, dramatic and inspirational artworks. Particularly eye-catching is Chech artist Jiri Kornatovsky's so-called "big potato" drawing, which was the focus of this morning's Drawing Together!

Teaching Artist Ruth Wetzel introduced a couple of key words to drive the exploration: contour and organic form. She then asked families to think about the differences between flat and round objects. How does an artist render a shape "round" or "flat?" What kinds of techniques are used to show light reflection, volume, and size? Using potatoes, peanuts, lemons, pears, and pomegranates as models, participants created round and flat depictions and even imagined their own "organic" scenes and beings.

Take a look at some of their final creations!

Thanks to Sewit Sium for her help today! And check back within the next couple of weeks for more updates on K.I.D.S summer programming, including the Creative Cookie fashion camp and a summer drawing program with the Community Justice Center.
