10/5/13: Drawing Together + Extreme Kids & Crew

This past weekend, Teaching Artist Meghan Keane led two workshops-- a Drawing Together in the gallery, and an introduction to our upcoming Saturday program with Extreme Kids and Crew at the P.S. 15 playground. In both workshops, kids and their parents were asked to create "hand-pixelated portraits" of their favorite things using various kinds of graph paper.

At the Drawing Together, participants were asked to look at both exhibitions (Michael Kukla's Hex & Grid, and David Ambrose's Surface to Surface) and draw from details that they noticed in the work. What colors, shapes, techniques did they find interesting? What did they think the artists were looking at or thinking of when they created their works?

Once they became familiar with the artwork, Meghan encouraged kids and adults to draw "portraits" of people or objects that they love inspired by the artists' techniques. These portraits consisted of people, animals, food, buildings, and life scenes. Once completed, Meghan asked everyone to label their artwork with describing words or use them to tell a story. Have a look at some of their creations:

Later in the day, we stopped by the Extreme Kids & Crew kick-off event to introduce our program. Here, families took some time out to draw their favorite foods-- turns out pizza, apples, and hamburgers are immensely popular! We used the grid to create patterns around the subjects and make blocky figures and shapes.

Thanks to all of our weekend participants for their fun and interesting points of view. Thanks to you for checking in on K.I.D.S. Art Education and please stay tuned for more amazing student artwork in the coming weeks!
