We are starting up a new year, a new exhibition season, and a new round of School Programs here at Kentler! As always, we are thrilled to be working with students from P.S. 15 and P.S. 146 The Brooklyn New School.
This spring, we have two fantastic exhibitions on view: Water Prayers, by New York artist Nancy Manter, and Selections from the Red Hook Archives, featuring maps, photographs and prints showcasing the history of our neighborhood.

In the front gallery space, students look at Nancy Manter's large-scale drawings of gesso on roofing paper. Teaching Artist Meghan Keane asks them to observe the work, talk about what they notice, and draw interesting details using charcoal. Here is some of what they came up with:

In the back space, Teaching Artist Ruth Wetzel leads a hands-on exploration of Selections from the Red Hook Archives. Looking at photographs by Teri Slotkin and Carol Dragon and maps of Red Hook, students discuss the different personal relationships, physical spaces and connections they share with others in the neighborhood.
They then break up into groups and create a community drawing by tracing their interconnected shadows. Have a look at this project in action:
