Our second round of School Programs is winding down and another exciting year of K.I.D.S. Art Education is coming to an end. This fall, we were lucky to have not one, but THREE fantastic exhibitions to work from. The current program is based on two solo shows: Tamiko Kawata's "Beyond Lines, Beyond Surface," and Joan Grubin's "Paper Optics." The use of light, shadow and reflective color by both artists was the focus of our two-part workshop.
In the gallery, students from P.S. 15 and Brooklyn New School participated in a two-part workshop based on each exhibition. Students in the front gallery space took inspiration from Tamiko Kawata's large cardboard pieces, using pointed sticks to poke, scratch and carve their own sheets of white cardboard. This created texture, depth and pattern through interaction with shadow. Here are some examples of their work in action:
In the back space, students looked at Joan Grubin's colorful installations, imitating her use of reflective color with three-dimensional creations in neon paper. They cut and folded their paper scraps to make interesting shapes with colorful shadows:
During the post visit, students revisited these techniques to create an imaginary "activity space" combining their cardboard planes and colored paper shapes. They crafted slides, airplanes, trampolines, rainbows, and other playful structures. Have a look at some of their finished work, now lining the walls of P.S. 15 and Brooklyn New School!

We had a great time with this bright, dynamic project and are very proud of the results. The next School Programs will be starting up sometime in February, so stay tuned for more exciting artwork in the coming weeks!
